Our little town of Montezuma, Costa Rica is a laid back and enjoyable spot to explore. There are a number of shops and restaurants to check out, selling many types of clothing and souvenirs. Montezuma is also filled with a many artisan tables selling handmade jewelry and crafts. Montezuma is very small and easily walk-able.
Montezuma is sandwiched between two beautiful beaches. With plenty of sun, shade and surf for everyone. The water temperature is very warm all year round and perfect for swimming. Montezuma has a number of interesting restaurants to try, from typical Costa Rican food to American and European cuisine.
Costa Rica is famous for it’s beautiful beaches. Montezuma is situated in the perfect place to enjoy Costa Rica beaches. In front of Ylang Ylang, we have a beautiful beach. Depending on the tide and size of waves, it can be very nice for swimming.
If the ocean is not idea for swimming in front of Ylang Ylang, there is a beautiful beach called Playa Grande, about a 20 minute walk from Ylang Ylang. Playa Grande has a big open beach and long rolling waves that are ideal for swimming, body surfing, or boogie boarding.
The beaches are also great for swimming as you walk closer in towards Montezuma. The water is perfect for swimming. The water temperature in Costa Rica is consistently very warm and enjoyable.
One of the most popular tours in our area is Tortuga Island in Costa Rica. This tour takes you on a 45 minute boat ride along the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, to Tortuga Island. Once you get near the island you’ll be offered snorkeling equipment and the opportunity jump in the water and see some marine life!

After snorkeling, the boat takes you to the island where can enjoy the white sand beaches and turquoise waters. They also offer activities like renting jet skis and riding on the banana boat. There are also lounge chairs and umbrellas for rent.

Your tour also includes a beach BBQ lunch that will be prepared for you there on the island. The tour also includes drinks. After lunch you can enjoy the beach and island before heading back on the boat to Montezuma!
Playa Grande Costa Rica is a long, expansive beach located about 20 minutes walking distance from Ylang Ylang. To get to Playa Grande, you walk through numerous jungle trails and beaches. You will cross a couple of small rivers, climb up and down some rocks and emerge at a beautiful long stretch of deserted beach. There are no building on Playa Grande and usually very few people. Early in the morning is the best time to find yourself on the beach alone.
Playa Grande also has long rolling waves and shallow water. It is perfect for swimming, boogie boarding and learning to surf. Playa Grande is also a private refuge, meaning that it cannot be built on or camped on and must stay preserved. Bring a hammock, towel, sunscreen, water, and snacks to enjoy your day here! The last few days we have had some wonderful evening storms. Falling asleep to the sound of the rain and waking up to fresh, clean air and sunny skies can’t be beat! It also means that the days are not as hot because of the cool rain. It’s a perfect time to take one of your relaxing family getaways, now that school is out for the summer!
Our family beach suite is the perfect room for a small family. It has two queen beds and a lofted king bed with large glass windows of a beach front view. The room also has a balcony with ocean views. Just steps from your room you will find a sandy area with comfortable lounge chairs and hammocks. Enjoy your spot perched on a lounge chair while your kids play in the sand!
We also offer a large and family friendly swimming pool, with lots of lounge chairs, hammocks and sun or shade. Kids love our pool and especially love our waterfall!
Costa Rica is an excellent place to take a family vacation, especially during the summer months when the kids are out of school. A family vacation to Costa Rica offers many activities for all ages. Traveling during the summer months (June, July and August) also means that Costa Rica will not be as crowded due to the low season in tourism. Not only does this mean that beaches, restaurants, tours and hotels will be less crowded, it also means that travel will be more affordable. Most hotels offer “green season rates” and for family travel these are great to take advantage of.
Our Family Beach Suite is the perfect room for small families. The suite has two queen beds and a king bed located in a loft with large panoramic glass windows of the ocean. The suite also has a nice balcony with furniture and a sandy area with lounge chairs in front.
Almost all of the tours and activities are family friendly. Even young children can enjoy the zipline, horseback riding, or snorkel tours. Be sure to check with the tour provider about minimum ages, but children usually love these exciting activities. They provide excellent memories of family vacation!
Over the last week, we have had our first rains of the season. This means that we are at the end of our dry season and the beginning of our green season! For the next few months, it will rain off and on. Some days more than others and some days not at all. In addition to your regular packing list, here’s a list of important items for you to be prepared for the rainy season when you pack for Costa Rica:
-Lightweight Rain Coat/Windbreaker
-Extra Batteries (With rainy season storms, the electricity is not as reliable)
-Battery operated alarm clock
-Flashlight with extra batteries
-Sandals that can get wet
-Lightweight and waterproof hiking shoes
-Lightweight clothing that dries quickly
-Waterproof cases for your phone, camera or other valuables
-Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (even though it’s the rainy season, the sun is still strong and powerful!)
The green/rainy season in Montezuma is a beautiful time to be here. It is not as hot, there is less dust, the trees and plants are lush and green, and Montezuma is not as crowded with tourists. The Cocalito Falls are located approximately 7 kilometers north of Montezuma, making it a pretty good beach hike that can take about 2 hours, depending on how fast you walk. The walk is beautiful, along pristine and deserted beaches. Often times, you’ll see only a handful of people along the way.The other option for getting to El Chorro is on horseback. This takes less time and can be a really fun for those who enjoy horseback riding!
Once you arrive at the falls, you will see that they fall right into the ocean. El Chorro is one of only 7 waterfalls in the world that fall into the ocean. If you climb up to the top, there is a nice, cool, fresh water stream for swimming in and a stunning panoramic view.
As mentioned, this is a long hike. It is definitely recommended to start early in the morning when it is not too hot and to bring lots of water, a hat and sunscreen. There is very little shade while walking. The best advice to to cool down by taking a swim and to make sure to stay hydrated!
